Big Bend Hospice, Transitions

*Serves clients who are not eligible for hospice care or who choose not to use hospice services but have needs which can be met by volunteers *Professionally managed, volunteer-based support system offering non-medical assistance to persons with a prognosis of death within one year or less *Social worker makes an initial visit to wherever client lives to assess requirements *Volunteers and social workers provide friendship and companionship 2-3 hours every 2 weeks, relief for caregivers, resource referrals, and transportation within guidelines *Nurse volunteers offer guidance in understanding complex medical decisions such as pursuing aggressive treatment

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Big Bend (BBBS)

*Mentoring program that matches mentors with youth ages 5-18, for one-on-one assistance in Title 1 elementary schools, mentors assist students with schoolwork and give individual attention in areas of academic deficiency, which results in greater academic success, also matches youth ages 6-14 with individual mentors who meet with them at least twice a month for a minimum of four hours to work on academic difficulties, career/college achievement, and positive social and emotional development *Participating youth must be enrolled by the age of 15, but once enrolled may receive services up to age 18; services may be limited in Big Bend counties outside of Leon; call for further information *Volunteers must be18 years of age or older, complete an FBI fingerprint-based background check, and reference check *To volunteer, visit www.

Community Action Agency, Getting Ahead

*Program consists of two components including a 15-week class called Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin’-by World; then upon completion, participants shift to the Staying Ahead Program where they are paired with 2 mentors who meet regularly for about 6 months to advise, counsel and encourage *Program assists with GED, trade/vocational education, higher education to improve opportunities for jobs with a livable wage; employability skills, and opportunity to participate in the Agency’s On-The-Job Training (OJT) Program; job placement, coaching, and counseling; ongoing counseling, monitoring, and support from a case manager/social worker to ensure continued progress toward family self-sufficiency goals; multiple opportunities for crisis/emergency assistance during the first year based on the availability of resources *Participants meet once a week in a relaxed discussion type atmosphere and class members work closely with Career Source, TCC and Lively Vocational School; funding may be available to pay for tuition, books, job training, childcare on a case by case basis *Call for more information about class dates and times *Persons interested in becoming a mentor may fill out an application on website or call to volunteer

Elder Care Services, Senior Volunteer Programs

*Foster Grandparents offer love and guidance in one-on-one settings to children with special and exceptional needs at schools and day care centers *Senior Companions give companionship to frail and isolated elderly in their homes *RSVP volunteers provide free transportation to seniors for essential trips: doctor appointments, grocery and pharmacy trips which are door to door service (pick up and drop off are at door) *RSVP volunteers offer talent and experience to non-profit agencies and faith-based organizations including Meals on Wheels *Some senior volunteers receive a small stipend and/or mileage reimbursement

Eskaton Telephone Reassurance Program

*Three programs to orient first generation, disabled, or lower-income students at the beginning and throughout their college careers *Programs seek to ease a student's transition into collegiate life and aid in increasing retention among the students in the program *Educational Talent Search: provides educational support for students from designated high schools who are preparing for college *Upward Bound Math and Science: helps high school students preparing for college to build math and science skills *Student Support Services: helps college students in the program with career, academic, and personal counseling, tutoring, workshops, applying for financial aid, grant opportunities, graduate school information and application assistance

*College Reach-Out Program (CROP): summer residential program that exposes 6th to 12th grade students to college life; housed in a residence hall; introduced to the realities of campus life *Attend workshops on admissions process, financial aid and career decision-making; tours of museums and cultural sites; learn standardized test-taking strategies; take special administration of SAT *Upward Bound Program: East Gadsden High School students prepare for higher education through academic instruction, counseling, tutoring and variety of fun and educational activities *Student receives extensive after school test preparation workshops for standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, FCAT *Summer Bridge Program (SBP): alternative admission program for first-generation college students, and students with disadvantaged economic, cultural or educational circumstances; designed to help ease high school students adjustment to college life and build foundation for academic success *Students required to apply for financial aid; may have 100% of their need for summer term met from non-loan sources *Students who do not qualify for financial aid may participate in program at regular summer-term rates on limited, first come, first-served basis *Advantages: living in campus housing with other participants, orientation to campus and other requirements, placement tests if needed *FSU staff and upperclassmen: advisors and mentors to students during program

*Outreach effort of FSU College of Medicine with support from Florida's Area Health Education Centers *Identifies and mentors middle school students with a genuine interest in pursuing a career in science, engineering, mathematics, health, or medicine *Pre-college component open to students from designated Florida high schools: after-school programs in Leon and Orange Counties, in-school in Collier, Gadsden, Madison, Okaloosa, and Walton Counties

Gadsden Senior Services, Inc

*On site activities include daily devotion, recreational activities, exercise sessions, presentations from government and social services agencies, travel to local attractions, nutritional information and daily nutritious lunch *Free transportation to and from Quincy site, telephone reassurance calls to homebound clients, *Meals on wheels, congregate hot lunch, emergency home energy assistance (EHEAP), legal aid *Case management upon referral from AAANF, Alzheimers disease support, community care for the elderly, respite care, companionship, and resource assistance for seniors, their families and caregivers *Direct Service Workers to assist in daily living activities: personal care, light housekeeping, laundry, respite for caregivers, and determining need for incontinence supplies *Offers emergency food distribution for Gadsden County seniors, the first Tuesday of every month, 1pm-2pm
