AKA:

Pre Exposure Prophylaxis; non-occupational Post Exposure Prophylaxis

Description:

*FL DOH has provided a map listing DOH and non-DOH providers who will prescribe PrEP and nPEP; both medicines are only for people who are HIV negative
*PrEP or Pre Exposure Prophylaxis is a once daily medicine prevention against HIV; typically, people who would benefit from PrEP are those routinely exposed to HIV and include: couples for which one is HIV- and the other HIV+, people with a high number of sex partners, people who don't use condoms consistently, sex workers, and IV drug users
*nPEP or non-occupational Post Exposure Prophylaxis is for persons who may have been exposed to HIV in a non-occupational setting, through sexual activity or IV drug use; nPEP must be started within 72 hours of a risk exposure and consists of a 28 day regimen of 2 or 3 medications daily; if the person is nearing the end of the 72 hour window period, he or she may want to call an emergency room to ask if they will provide nPEP
*Both PrEP and nPEP will lower the risk of contracting HIV, but neither is 100% effective
*Some primary care physicians and clinics will provide PrEP and/or nPEP
*Almost all county DOH's are providing PrEP; either at no cost or on a sliding scale fee
